During a rare televised speech on 19 September, the head of the Yemeni Supreme Political Council, Mehdi al-Mashat, blamed the US for being the main cause of the ongoing Saudi aggression against Yemen.

“The United States is the main cause of the aggression against Yemen and other countries are its executive tools in this aggression,” Al-Mashat said.

During his speech he also pledged to liberate all of Yemen, saying: “every inch of our land will be liberated whether in Marib or other places. This is our task and responsibility,” in reference to the recent victory by the Yemeni army in liberating large swathes of Marib governorate from the Saudi-led coalition.

He also warned against biased reports about the situation in Marib, highlighting that “the ongoing global noise about Marib has nothing to do with the civil rights or humanitarian concerns. You hear the noises because they are afraid to lose the oil fields.”

Al-Mashat criticized UN support for the aggressor states as well, reminding the international institution that politicizing humanitarian issues is “completely unacceptable,” while also saying that “the humanitarian issues in Yemen should be separated from the military issues.”

The Ansarallah political leader then took time to highlight the strength of the 21 September revolution, saying: “the Aggression thought that they would destroy us but it strengthened us and did not break us,” later adding, “as we are winning on the military side we will win on the economic side,” referring to the western-backed economic blockade placed on the Arab world’s poorest nation.

Al-Mashat also drew attention to one of the persistent complaints of the Yemeni government: the human rights abuses by Israel against Palestinians, calling it “a priority for us.”

“We believe that one of the most important reasons for the aggression [against us] is because we support Palestine, and every bombing carried out by the aggression makes us love and believe more in Palestine and its liberation,” Al-Mashat said, finally noting that “we are free people and we support freedom.”
