A member of the governing coalition of Israel, Danny Danon, announced on 11 January that he is working on proposing legislation to annex the Jordan Valley, which makes up 30 percent of the West Bank.

According to local reports, Danon, previously designated as Tel Aviv’s ambassador to the UN, intends to apply Israeli law to all areas of the Jordan Valley, including its industrial and archaeological sectors alongside its roads.

Danon reiterated that the annexation is vital to Israel on an economic and historical level regarding upholding national security, adding, “We know that there is support for the application of Israel’s sovereignty of the Jordan Valley, both in the government’s coalition as well as in the opposition.”

The proposal has yet to be ratified by the Israeli Knesset, and it has not been disclosed when it will be proposed to parliament.

Last month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed that his coalition government, led by the Likud Party, is set to annex its settlements in the West Bank shortly after his government was formed.

As part of his deal with Jewish supremacist factions, Netanyahu agreed to officially authorize illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank within the next 60 days. This is considered a de facto annexation, as the authorization gives Tel Aviv direct authority over the occupied West Bank.

In November of 2022, Netanyahu reportedly agreed to grant the Religious Zionist Party, led by new ministers Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben Gvir, control of the Civil Administration, which is currently in talks to annex the entirety of the West Bank.

Israeli NGO Peace Now has warned that if the far-right Religious Zionist party gains control of the Civil Administration, it could trigger an eventual complete annexation of the occupied Palestinian territory.
