Palestinian resistance factions in the Gaza Strip fired two rockets toward the adjacent Israeli settlement of Ashkelon in the early hours of 27 January, which were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system.

No injuries or damages were reported.

“A short time ago an alarm was sounded in the city of Ashkelon. These two launches towards the city were intercepted by the Iron Dome system,” said the Ashkelon Municipality spokesperson.

The attack was launched in retaliation to the massive Israeli invasion of the city of Jenin and the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank on Thursday, during which Israeli troops perpetrated a massacre that left 10 Palestinians dead.

Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) pledged on Thursday to respond to the massacre in Jenin, but no party has claimed responsibility for firing the rockets.

“The occupation will pay the price for the massacre it carried out in Jenin and its camp this morning, and the response of the resistance will not be delayed,” the deputy head of the political bureau of Hamas, Saleh al-Arouri, said in a statement.

“The will of our nation is stronger than the crimes of the occupying regime. Jenin, the West Bank, and its residents will remain invincible, and these crimes will only increase the strength and determination of the people to fight,” he added.

For his part, the secretary general of the PIJ, Ziyad Nakhala, said, “This aggression against the Palestinian people in Jenin and the valiant West Bank will not stop the resistance, and our people’s brave fighters will remain in the field and will remain in a state of continuous confrontation with the (Israeli) enemy.”

“We will not be broken, and we will not retreat despite the pain … our guns are ready to fight and defend the Palestinian people and their sacred goals,” he added.

Following the massacre, the Palestinian Authority (PA) said it ended its security coordination with Israel.
