Thousands of mourners flooded the streets of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank on 13 July for the funeral of activist Suha Jarrar after the Israeli occupation authorities prohibited her mother, legislator Khalida Jarrar, from attending her burial rites. In a letter written from prison, the detained member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) expressed her deep sadness at her daughter’s sudden passing and her inability to attend the funeral, saying: “I am a proud and patient mother despite being tied down and jailed, but I am also full of longing. All this happens only in Palestine. I wanted to say goodbye to my daughter with a kiss on her forehead… But forgive me, my daughter.”

Jarrar, 58, has been imprisoned numerous times, often without charge. In 2019, she was sentenced to two years in jail for her membership in the PFLP, which Israel labels as a “terrorist” organization. Her daughter, who was 31, passed away on 12 July of a sudden cardiac arrest.
