Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh.

On 20 December, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said during his daily briefing with reporters that further negotiations between Iran and Saudi Arabia require the latter’s “seriousness.”

He also confirmed that the 5th round of the negotiations between Tehran and Riyadh has not yet begun.

When asked by The Cradle’s Iran correspondent whether Jordanian media reports of a meeting between Saudi and Iranian security officials in Amman signalled a continuation of the main negotiations, Khatibzadeh responded that “the fifth round of Iran-Saudi Arabia talks have not been conducted yet,” implicitly denying the reports.

The senior diplomat did, however, confirm that “the foreign ministers of Iran and Saudi Arabia had a brief meeting” on the sidelines of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) foreign ministers meeting in Islamabad, Pakistan on 19 December.

On whether Iran-Saudi negotiations will continue in earnest, Khatibzadeh responded:

“We did not have a new development in this regard. We are still waiting for Riyadh’s answer. The progress of the negotiations will depend on the seriousness of the other side. To the extent that they show seriousness, we are ready to make progress in the talks as well as to reach an understanding on the region and the bilateral talks.”

He added: “We call on Riyadh for political and diplomatic solutions and non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries. Comprehensive regional arrangements go through mutual respect and understanding of the realities of these countries.”

On 16 December, Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan noted that Riyadh welcomes further negotiations with Tehran.

Faisal bin Farhan also denied reports of a secret meeting between Saudi security experts with Iranians on the sidelines of a security meeting in Jordan, saying that a round of direct talks between Iran and Saudi Arabia is in progress.
